Water Main Break: Hollywood, Cal.

February 18th, 2015

Another 100 year-old water main came apart in Hollywood sometime last night.  After listening to the affected residents in the area who were interviewed on the news reports, it doesn’t appear that society saved any money by not proactively replacing this pipe/main/valve (or whatever) ahead of its catastrophic failure.

Of course, I have heard of an untold number of water main failures across the nation since I have last blogged on the matter.  However, after seeing many cities and towns begin to replace and upgrade their water mains over the last few years, I have more-or-less been letting the matter slide.

Nevertheless, this particular water main break in Hollywood is a perfect case-in-point to show that it is likely to be cheaper (less expensive) to proactively replace these systems than to wait to do so after any catastrophic failures – which was one of the original points and issues that brought this blog into existence.  Worth noting, Hollywood, California is in an earthquake zone.  So, to wait a 100 years or so before replacing any necessary infrastructure (which would be subject to failure/fatigue due to earthquakes) also seems as yet another perfect example of ineptitude and most likely an example of gross negligence as well.

Multiple Water Main Breaks in L.A. Today

April 3rd, 2012

It is being reported that there has been as many as eight (8) water main breaks throughout the City of Los Angeles this morning thus far. (Blog entry at 0930 local time.) Good Day LA (Fox television channel 11), reported that there has been five water main breaks and that L.A. Dept. of Water and Power (DWP) – according to the Fox 11 reporter – suggests that the multiple breaks are likely a result of work done while taking a local water reservoir off-line and then placing it back on-line to the water main system. Of course, as yet, no one appears to know the actual reason for all the water main breaks this morning.

Again, the level of deterioration of Our Nation’s infrastructure is nearly disgusting, at least to this blogger. Again I blog: Rebuild the Nation’s Infrastructure or Repeal the Eleventh Amendment to the Federal Constitution!!

Too Many Sinkholes, Water Main and Gas Main Breaks

December 13th, 2011

Lately, there have been so many water main breaks, gas main breaks, and sinkholes reported nearly everywhere across the U.S. nation that I can't even attempt to keep up blogging on those which I hear about. So the matter is simple:

REBUILD THE NATION'S INFRASTRUCTURE SYSTEMS OR IT APPEARS THE TIME IS AT HAND TO SERIOUSLY CHALLENGE THE ELEVENTH AMENDMENT WHICH WOULD THEN MAKE THE GOVERNMENTS ACROSS OUR LAND LIABLE FOR THEIR DYSFUNCTIONAL PARADIGMS.

Water Main Breaks in Studio City, Cal

November 9th, 2011

Studio City, California reportedly had "multiple" water main breaks a day or so ago. The massive amounts of water from the broken main flooded and closed streets and generally caused significant havoc to residents and motorists alike. The breaks were blamed on "old parts" - or something like that.

As I repeatedly blog:

REBUILD THE NATION’S INFRASTRUCTURE!!!

...Please?

PS. I mean..., is the infrastructure under attack or is it really falling apart that quickly? Where are our politicians? Where are our tax dollars?

Water Main and Gas Main Breaks Continue…

June 9th, 2011

While significant amounts of work appears to be underway on many of the nation’s roadways, the gas main and water main systems seem to be in the same poor and antiquated conditions as always. During my limited travels, I have encountered water main breaks in Cambridge and Medford [among other breaks in] Massachusetts, Brighton New York, and a gas main break somewhere around the Fort Lee New Jersey area.

There are continually so many water main and gas main breaks in our nation that it is becoming difficult to locate the specific story information when searching for any given break – as there are so many reported breaks throughout the nation. Infrastructure failures such as these are becoming so common place that the news media sources are starting to not report on these matters. Don’t let anyone fool you, these types of catastrophic infrastructure failures can be dangerous in addition to being costly and inconvenient.

Rebuild nation’s infrastructure!!

Flooding Continues in New Jersey, Despite Reported Federal Promises over the Last Several Years to Fix the Flooding Issues.

March 14th, 2011

As reported on WABC two nights ago, widespread flooding continues its annual occurrence through much of New Jersey. Local residents being interviewed on New York’s WABC Eleven O’Clock Eyewitness News stated that the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers had repeatedly (year-over-year) promised to remedy the water/dam controls that have apparently added to the flooding misery in the affected region. To date, no repairs appear to be on the horizon.

Surely one must begin to wonder – given all the waterway calamities of the last several decades, if the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers is merely another entity on the long list of inept Federal government agencies? Clearly, it appears that the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers has been on hiatus on a never-ending government/taxpayer funded boondoggle throughout the agency’s recent existence. Given no reported official statement from the Corps of Engineers on this matter, we can then only guess.

From the article:
“NEW JERSEY (WABC) -- Water in northern New Jersey is slowly receding, but much of the region remained under water.

In Paterson, the Passaic River continues to spill into the streets, and a bridge was completely consumed. Homes along the Pompton River are still surrounded by water, while homes in Fairfield remain submerged.

A number of residents remain in shelters, and the situation doesn't look like it will get any better until at least midweek.

The floodwater may be slowly receding, but it's going to take much longer for life to start returning to normal. And residents know this will not be the last time.
"So it's like, do you want to live like this all the time?" Little Falls resident Joe Hida said. "It's very difficult to even watch this."

Emergency officials say it will be Tuesday at the earliest before anyone is allowed home in Little Falls. School was canceled there Monday, as well as in Paterson and Woodland Park.”

As I have repeatedly blogged: REBUILD OUR NATION’S CRUMBLING INFRASTRUCTURE!!! Or, REPEAL THE ELEVENTH (11th) AMENDMENT TO THE U.S. FEDERAL CONSTITUTION and make our governments liable for their neglect and incompetence. Our government may not be able to stop natural disasters, but it can darn well better prepare for such – given all the money the government supposedly spends to these ends and towards such goals!

Boston Expressway Crumbles as Mass. Governor Goes Around-the-World to ‘Create Jobs’ (??)

March 14th, 2011

As widely reported on local Boston television news a few days ago, one of the main arteries into the City of Boston (the state Capitol of Massachusetts) began to visibly crumble, develop a gaping hole, and was then closed to traffic during Friday morning rush-hour. Meanwhile, the governor of Massachusetts was traveling at taxpayer expense to the countries of Israel and the United Kingdom in supposed pursuit of job creation for the State of Massachusetts.

I mean, what is going on here? Are our elected officials in denial or are they merely stupid? The infrastructure is crumbling throughout the nation – even at their front door – and the politicians still claim to be unaware of how to create jobs?

REBUILD OUR NATION’S CRUMBLING INFRASTRUCTURE!!! Believe me, such an effort would create alot of jobs!! (Have the contracts already been let to this end?)

It typically appears that our elected officials are either too self-serving, or they are not really concerned for the nation’s welfare, or they are completely inept!

As such: It seems the time is at hand to REPEAL THE ELEVENTH (11th) AMENDMENT TO THE U.S. FEDERAL CONSTITUTION and make our governments liable for their neglect and incompetence – either that, or maybe I will have to run for office myself (but with no political machine to back me, well….anyway).

As I have repeatedly blogged: REBUILD OUR NATION’S CRUMBLING INFRASTRUCTURE!!!

Adam Vernon Trotter, P.E. / AVT

P.S. By the way, it always appeared to me the U.K. ‘fat-cats’ didn’t care much to employ their own workers in their nation. I don’t really understand why anyone would think those ‘fat-cats’ would really care one-way-or-the-other about employing American workers in the U.S. (Sorry, I had to add this last thought, too!)

Our City Streets Are In Horrific Condition!!! To the Government Entities of our Nation: Please Rebuild Our Streets and Our Infrastructure!

February 13th, 2011

The City Streets Throughout Much of Our Nation Are In Horrific Condition - at least in most of the nation where I have visited during the recent past and particularly in the majority of the northeastern portion of our American Nation!!! (This subject is a recurring theme in this and many of my blogs, btw.)

And, please don't get me wrong, it's certainly not just the city streets that are in horrific condition either. Rebuild them all!! That's what I have to say about it!

To the Government Entities of our Nation: Please Rebuild Our Streets and Our Infrastructure! Must WE the populace beg for you to act and actually rebuild the roads (and not merely fill the potholes and/or lay a minimal amount of asphalt to cover the horrific road-scapes - which, of course is better than nothing, but...)?

Or, would it be better for the populace to play 'hardball' and demand that the Eleventh (11th) Amendment to the U.S. Federal Constitution be repealed so that we may hold government entities responsible and liable for the continued damage to our vehicles as a result of traversing the horrific roads throughout our Nation?

Massive Water Main Breaks and Gas Main Explosions Continue. REBUILD OUR CRUMBLING INFRASTRUCTURE! (PLEASE?!?)

February 11th, 2011

Though this blog is a bit overdue, the infrastructure of our Nation continues to crumble and decay. While costing us time and money, the crumbling infrastructure also continues to claim innocent lives – as I have blogged herein several times before. I have to wonder, are our government officials now also waiting to give these infrastructure efforts and jobs to workers from Asia as well? What is the reason for the delay? Furthermore, if such efforts of rebuilding our infrastructure had been continually underway, the latest economic depression would surely have not been as severe to many of our domestic industries as it was. However, to effect this effort, maybe we need to repeal the Eleventh (11th) Amendment to the U.S. Federal Constitution to hold our governments responsible for the neglect of our infrastructure. Oh Yea…., No Surprise: Another Water Main Break, This Time in Gloucester, Mass.

December 23rd, 2010

Oh yea, I almost forgot to blog this latest one that I heard. Not like it’s any surprise, but, there was another somewhat major water main break. This time the [un-] lucky town was Gloucester, Massachusetts. According to the reports of New England Cable News (NECN) of the A.M of December 21st, 2010 (as I recall), a water main broke in Gloucester causing the need for an order to be issued to boil drinking water and such mandated the closing of a public school – as the school then had no water to make lunches for the students, etc.

One has to wonder if the town had been in the process of replacing any of its, no doubt, antiquated water main system or if the water folks of that town merely wait for colossal failures before replacing any components of its water systems – in keeping with the apparent line of thought of most of the other water companies in our nation.

No school, no water, and surely no hot showers on the first day of winter. Is this what our taxes now pay for in this nation: unreliable and crumbling infrastructure systems? Apparently so, huh?

“Good Job” to WNYW Fox 5 Investigates: Nassau County, NY, Water Companies

December 20th, 2010

Two nights ago (Saturday), New York’s Fox Television Channel 5 investigated the status of New York’s Nassau County (Long Island) water companies. The investigation revealed well in excess of twenty water companies for this single New York county – a county that has one of the highest costs of living in the United States. As we all know, the public water companies are typically small government-sanctioned monopolies. And, as confirmed by a public watchdog group during the investigation, all these water companies are providing water to the county residents from the same water source. So, the investigation asked, why does Nassau county need more than twenty water companies for a single county especially when the water is all coming from the same source? Furthermore, the investigation displayed these water companies as being typically bastions of nepotism and apparently often an example of the wasting of government funds as well. For example, each of these water companies have a superintendent/director that makes $130,000 to $200,000 (+/-) per year plus tens of thousands in per diem expenses for attending meetings of the water company (per diem policies such as in keeping with the mode of corrupt, ousted, investigated, and recently arrested city officials from Bell, California).

As I have longed asked in this blog: what is with the dysfunctional manner of operations of the water systems in our nation, this Fox 5 Investigates has displayed the other side of the coin which clearly illuminates at least a potential reason why our public utilities are so screwed-up in our nation – at least assuming Nassau county is any example of what is happening in the rest of the nation.

“Thumbs up” and “good job” to WNYW’s Fox 5 Investigates for such a socially-relevant expose. The nation clearly needs more of these types of investigations for the current times in which we are trying to reign in our massive, expensive, and out of control government entities which seem to care little for the financial well-being of the taxpayer. Again, kudos to WNYW’s Fox 5 Investigates!

More Water Main Breaks: Chelsea, Mass. and Kansas City, Mo.

December 15th, 2010

According to CBS Evening News of yesterday there was a massive water main break in Kansas City, Missouri, which left several residences inaccessible. And, according to WBZ Boston, today there was a massive water main break today in Chelsea, Mass. Both breaks were likely results of the freezing cold weather. The break in Chelsea was determined to be the failure of a one-hundred year old water main pipe.

So, as I have repeatedly asked, when are our governments going to whole-heartedly address the aging and failing infrastructure of our nation?

Politicians Bumble While the Nation’s Infrastructure Crumbles. Water Main Break Boston MA. Thoroughfare Bridge Closed Portsmouth NH/Kittery ME.

December 9th, 2010

While the politicians have been debating on how much of the taxpayers' dollars to give away, the nation’s infrastructure continues to crumble and decay.

In Boston's South End, a forty year old water main broke and left many with no water and no power in the abnormally bitter cold of this December morning. Temperatures were less than twenty degrees Fahrenheit.

http://www1.whdh.com/news/articles/local/12002958473214/water-main-break-causes-sinkhole-in-boston-south-end/

http://www.boston.com/yourtown/news/south_end/2010/12/water_restored_in_south_end_af.html

While in nearby Portsmouth, New Hampshire, the ninety year old Memorial Bridge which carries U.S. Highway Route 1 across the Piscataqua River to Kittery, Maine has been declared unsafe for vehicular traffic. Though the bridge was scheduled to be demolished and replaced sometime over the next three years, due to recently discovered excessive decay and the cost of repairing the doomed bridge as it stands, the span has been closed to vehicular traffic – much to the chagrin of nearby merchants. Though, NH DoT appears to be fairly competent and was able to catch this decay prior to any catastrophic consequences - so 'good job' to that agency.

http://www.wabi.tv/news/16290/kittery-portsmouth-nh-bridge-closed

So, again I ask, do the government-endorsed public utilities and other agencies that maintain our infrastructure still honestly believe it is in the nation’s best interest to wait until our infrastructure collapses before they will allocate the money to bring our infrastructure up to date? I bet those in San Bruno, California would have preferred their politicians to show any amount of concern regarding their infrastructure systems and had mandated the replacement of antiquated system components prior to the catastrophic natural gas system explosion that killed many innocent civilians in their town.

Minor Rains and Winds Leaves Thousands with No Electricity, Massive Water Main Break in Canoga Park.

October 5th, 2010

Over the last two days or so, the greater Los Angeles area has received a few fractions of an inch of rain. As a result, tens of thousands of homes have reportedly lost electrical power for some period of time. Furthermore, though no one is absolutely sure if such is related, a massive water main break this evening in the San Fernando Valley’s Canoga Park area has closed roadways and threatens the structural integrity of nearby buildings which house several businesses.

As taxpayers, how long must we repeatedly endure seeing the ever-increasing decay of our nation’s infrastructure with little apparent concern over the matter from our elected officials who oversee the cognizant utility companies???? I AGAIN SAY, REBUILD OUR NATION’S INFRASTRUCTURE!!! If such takes the election of an entirely new breed of politician, well so be it. If any typical politician has been in office for several decades to witness the decay of the nation’s infrastructure [and workforce], I say:

VOTE THE TYPICALLY SELF-SERVING BUMS OUT OF OFFICE!!! Let’s get some politicians in office that truly care for the well-being of the nation more than they care for their own self-centered desires.

Another Water Main Break

May 25th, 2010

Yet another water main break closes commuter roadway during drive-home rush hour. Do you think it was cheaper to wait till until catastrophic system failure before rebuilding this water main system?

On May 19th or so, WFME Radio 94.7 FM in the New York City Area briefly reported a water main break in some township in northern New Jersey. The water main catastrophic break was only minimal news, of course – as water main failures are quite common these days. However, this water main break forced the closure of a main commuter route whereby the traffic was forced to be rerouted on alternative roadways. So I wonder, in keeping with the apparent general consensus of the public works departments of our nations, was this water main better to wait for catastrophic failure as it displayed or would it have been better to rebuild this main on our own terms and at a predetermined time? Rebuild all the water main systems (and city streets)!!!!! NOW!!!

Colossal Water Main Break Western Boston Suburbs - Boil Drinking Water Ordered

May 3rd, 2010

A couple of days ago, May 1st - I believe, there was a colossal water main break in a suburb west of Boston. The main was apparently a major valve for the most of the water supply to most of the Boston suburbs. The affected Boston suburbs are now under a standing order / advisory to boil drinking water. Most all the stores immediately sold-out of bottled water inventories.

Barring any unusual circumstances such as terrorism or new equipment failure, do you suppose it was better to wait for a catastrophic failure to repair this water main system? I doubt it. (See also: http://engineeringandcommerce.blogspot.com/2010/03/rebuild-nations-water-mains-and-sewer.html)

Rebuild the Nation’s Water Mains and Sewer Systems and City Streets!

Reposted here from an earlier blog post:

February 10th, 2010

During a heavy rainstorm the other day, I was surprised to notice the massive amount of water flowing out of a storm drain and back onto the rapidly flooding street. A little later, as I was driving through the small lakes and streams that are normally shoddy city streets, I again began to reflect on the state of the nation’s infrastructure. I started to ponder why more infrastructure projects have not been undertaken to rebuild the nation’s often ancient sewer and water main systems as well as the antique city streets. I understand the rationale to wait until these systems break to begin any repairs or rebuilding efforts. But, maybe the best ‘bang for the buck’ or return on investment would not be to wait until these infrastructure systems demand immediate attention when they fail. Nevertheless, given the fact that the nation can afford to spend probably a billion dollars a day in Iraq and Afghanistan, and given the fact that the nation can afford to give trillions of dollars to our impoverished bankers and financial institutions, I found myself at a loss as to why the nation does not undertake the massive engineering and infrastructure projects required to rebuild the country’s water main and sewer systems before these systems catastrophically fail – with such failure likely only a matter of time. I mean…, we could create a lot of engineering-related jobs by investing more in our nation’s infrastructure.

Adam Trotter, P.E. / AVT

PS. Should such engineering endeavors ever be undertaken by the nation as a whole, we could probably use to replace some of the ancient bridges as well, if not build more bridges to supplement the over-crowded ones that exist now.
